MOT Professor Wins the Edelman Prize

Professor Omar Romero-Hernandez, who teaches MBA 290P/ENG 290P: Project Management with the Management of Technology (MOT) Program, was recently presented with the World’s Distinguishing 2010 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

On January 12, 2011, Susan L. Albin, President of INFORMS presented the official Franz Edelman 2010 Award. This award represents the world's best tradition of the practice of Operations Research and the Management of Sciences. Professor Romero-Hernandez worked as researcher and leader for INDEVAL’s new business process design project. The prize recognizes the work of INDEVAL, the Central Bank of Mexico and ITAM in the innovative design of a new Securities Settlement System (SSS) used to manage transactions in the finance sector. This new system includes an Operations Research-based engine that manages financial transactions which in average account for over $250 US billion daily. This new settlement engine can function with minimal resources while meeting the ever-increasing demands for intraday liquidity and for better risk management tools.

Professor Romero-Hernandez is quoted as saying, “It has been an honor to compete with many Internationally renowned universities and companies. I am delighted to see that many of the tools and concepts that we teach at Haas can lead to the accomplishment of one of the World’s most prestigious OR and Management of Science award.
