The UC Berkeley Mayfield Fellows Program is now accepting applications for summer 2012 internships. Paid summer internships at venture capital-funded Silicon Valley high tech start-ups will be made available to up to 10 graduate students at UC Berkeley.

Who may apply?

You must be a 1st year Haas MBA student or an MS or PhD student in Engineering or the School of Information
You must be a full-time UC Berkeley graduate student returning to UCB in Fall 2012
You must have completed a Bachelors degree in engineering or science

How do I apply?

What kind of work will I perform under this internship?

Your work under this internship will be determined by the executives of the company where you are employed as well as by your background and level of experience. The type of work may be senior staff or operational work involving product management, marketing, business development or engineering.

How is this program different from other internships?

Being a Mayfield Fellow differs substantially from other corporate internships, in the following ways:

The selection process is tough. If you are chosen, you will be offered an opportunity that recognizes your potential in management and technology.
Mayfield Fellows form an association that lasts for life, and benefits you by welcoming you into a network of high tech professionals in Silicon Valley.
You will have four layers of mentorship: an executive at the company where you will intern, a partner at a venture capital fund, an alumnus of the Mayfield Fellows Program, and a faculty advisor from Haas.
During the summer, you will visit each of the other companies hosting a Mayfield Fellow, meet the management there, and learn that company’s business and strategy.

Which companies are hosting the internships?

The companies hosting interns under this program are venture capital-backed start-ups in various high technology fields, most located in Silicon Valley. Fellows will begin interviews at these companies in March and April, 2012, and they and the companies will jointly choose the best fit for both parties based on opportunities available. Salaries are competitive based on normal rates in industry, and are paid by the company.

Mr. Howard I. Atkins has been the Chief Financial Officer of Wachovia Preferred Funding Corp. since February 2, 2009. Mr. Atkins served as the Chief Financial Officer of Wells Fargo & Company, a subsidiary of Wells Fargo Foothill, Inc. from August 2001 to February 8, 2011 and its Senior Executive Vice President from August 2005 to February 8, 2011. He served as the Head of investor relations, controller's division, treasury, corporate development, investment portfolio, corporate properties and venture capital at Wells Fargo & Company until February 8, 2011.

Mr. Atkins was responsible for Wells Fargo's financial management functions (including controllers, financial reporting, tax management, asset-liability management, treasury, corporate development, investor relations, mergers and acquisitions), its investment portfolios (including fixed income, venture capital and private equity investments) and its corporate properties functions.

Mr. Atkins has nearly 30 years of Financial Experience, including more than 12 years as Chief Financial Officer for Financial and Insurance Institutions. Mr. Atkins earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from City College of New York and a Masters Degree in Economics from Ohio State University.

Howard will discuss: Innovation in Financial Services

Pramod John is Vice President of Strategy and Innovation for McKesson Pharmaceutical. He is responsible for examining opportunities for expansion and optimization in the healthcare space and seeking opportunities for performance improvement in delivery systems, infrastructure and supply chain. More recently, Pramod has become deeply involved in the exploration of strategic opportunities rooted in the current focus on healthcare reform. In addition, Pramod is actively involved in the mergers and acquisitions space.

Prior to joining McKesson, Pramod was the founder and CEO of PacketMotion, Inc., which is a venture-funded startup in the enterprise network information and policy management space. Pramod also founded netExaminer in 1999, which was acquired by SonicWALL in 2000. At SonicWALL, Pramod was the Director of Software Engineering. In addition, Pramod has served as an Enterprise Consultant, advising companies such as Cisco, Barclays, Healthnet and Veritas. Before that, he served as Software Systems Architect at Lockheed-Martin. Pramod's career includes over a decade of experience in business development, product strategy and development and IT service delivery. Pramod has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

IBM Innovation Champion and Director of IBM University Programs World Wide (IBM UP), Jim works to align IBM and universities in regional innovation ecosystems globally. Previously, Jim helped found IBM’s first Service Research group, the global Service Science community, and was founding CTO of IBM’s Venture Capital Relations Group in Silicon Valley. During the 1990’s while at Apple Computer, he was awarded Apple’s Distinguished Engineer Scientist and Technology title for his work on next generation learning platforms. Jim has a PhD in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence from Yale, and BS in Physics from MIT. His current research priorities include applying service science to create smarter (less waste and more capabilities) universities and cities, also known as tightly-coupled holistic service systems that provide “whole service” to the people within them. He has more than 90 publications, been awarded six patents, and is a Fellow of the SRII (Service Research and Innovation Institute).

Jim will be discussing: Role of Universities

Esteve Almirall holds a PhD in Management Sciences (ESADE), a MRes in Management Scienes, a MCIS and a DEA in Artificial Intelligence (UPC). Most of his career has been devoted to Information Technologies, especially in consulting, banking and finances where he worked for more than 20 years in executive and board level positions in IS, Organization and Marketing. As an entrepreneur he actively participated and founded several start-ups and new ventures in the field. Moreover, Esteve has an MBA, a PDD from IESE and a Diploma in Marketing from UC Berkeley.

Esteve Almirall seved as Associated Professor in UPC (2004-2009) and he is currently appointed as a lecturer at ESADE and as associated professor at UPF. He teaches at PhD, Master, Executive and BS levels. His interests focus on Open Innovation, Innovation and AI tools that could foster innovation. Esteve also collaborates and is deeply involved with some NGO.

Ron Resnick is president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum, a position he has held since 2004. He is employed by Intel as an executive member of the Mobile Wireless Group. In June 2002, Resnick launched and became general manager of Intel’s Broadband Wireless Access business startup focused on developing a baseband modem for last mile broadband access based upon WiMAX technology. In April 2000 he joined Intel, where, as director of new business development for Intel’s Corporate Technology Group, he managed technology commercialization efforts within Intel’s labs and concurrently served as an investment director within Intel’s New Business Initiatives, an internal venture fund established to launch and incubate new business efforts internal to Intel.

Ron will discuss: Open Innovation in International Mobile Communications.

Dr. Oliver Alexy joined Imperial College Business School as a Research Associate in the Knowledge for Innovation theme in September 2008, working with Ammon Salter and Paola Criscuolo, and has been promoted to Research Fellow in May 2010. His research interests are focused on open and distributed innovation processes, trying to understand how firms can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of R&D by collaboration with external parties. In particular, Oliver is interested in uncovering how firms' participation in open and distributed innovation necessitates changes in firm's innovation strategy, organization of R&D, and learning behavior. Oliver's research has been published or is forthcoming in the Sloan Management Review and Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice. Copies of his working papers can be found at SSRN.

Robotics Business Model Challenge

Robotics Business Model Challenge kicks off on February 24th at 6pm in Wells Fargo – food and drinks provided!

For the first time, the European Business Club is organizing the Robotics Business Model Challenge, giving away $5,000 prize money. Based on the latest robotics technology, teams will develop innovative business applications in any sector. This competition is not a robot-building contest and no technology background is required.

Frank T. Piller is a Professor of Management and the Director of the Technology & Innovation Management Group of RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He also is an Executive Faculty Member of the MIT Smart Customization Group at the MIT Design Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Before entering his recent position in Aachen, he worked at the MIT Sloan School of Management (BPS, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group, 2004-2007) and has been an Associate Professor of Management at the Department of Information, Organization, and Management (IOM, Head: Professor R. Reichwald) at TUM Business School (1999-2004). At TUM, he founded and directed the research group “customer driven value creation”. During sabbaticals in 2001 and 2004, he worked as a visiting professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Professor Omar Romero-Hernandez, who teaches MBA 290P/ENG 290P: Project Management with the Management of Technology (MOT) Program, was recently presented with the World’s Distinguishing 2010 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

On January 12, 2011, Susan L. Albin, President of INFORMS presented the official Franz Edelman 2010 Award. This award represents the world's best tradition of the practice of Operations Research and the Management of Sciences. Professor Romero-Hernandez worked as researcher and leader for INDEVAL’s new business process design project. The prize recognizes the work of INDEVAL, the Central Bank of Mexico and ITAM in the innovative design of a new Securities Settlement System (SSS) used to manage transactions in the finance sector. This new system includes an Operations Research-based engine that manages financial transactions which in average account for over $250 US billion daily. This new settlement engine can function with minimal resources while meeting the ever-increasing demands for intraday liquidity and for better risk management tools.

Professor Romero-Hernandez is quoted as saying, “It has been an honor to compete with many Internationally renowned universities and companies. The Open Innovation Speaker Series is a weekly series intended to provide both academic and managerial perspectives on open innovation and related subjects. The organizers are Henry Chesbrough and Solomon Darwin of the Center for Open Innovation at UC Berkeley. It is open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

The processes of industrial innovation are themselves being innovated. The locus of innovation is shifting, from largely being confined to operations within the four walls of the corporation, to a more distributed, open model of innovation. In this more open approach, useful knowledge can be found from a wealth of possible sources. Companies need to re-orient their management processes to make greater use of external knowledge in their own innovation systems. In turn, companies would do well to let their own unused ideas flow to other businesses for them to use. Related topics involve the opportunity to engage with customers in more participatory processes, advancing science through more open, collaborative, and rapid means, and creating markets and pathways for people around the world to connect and innovate.

This research is in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, India, faculty and students and seeks to provide healthcare services, including an HMO, to the poorest of people. The team from the IIT Kharagpur has so far developed hospital partnerships to support the endeavor and have set up 10 technology-rich stations in eastern India to provide services. The team is ready to move to the next phase of development and is seeking a collaborative relationship with UC Berkeley students, who will bring UC Berkeley-based knowledge and insight into this important endeavor.

Students working on this project may elect to take it for independent study credit with Professor Ikhlaq Sidhu.

About the Ideal Candidates
Undergraduate or graduate students in engineering, business, or public health interested in alleviating poverty by implementing knowledge and insight gained at UC Berkeley. Students should also have the flexibility to devote significant time and attention to this project for one to two months. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communications skills.

The Digital Media and Entertainment Club (DMEC) is excited to invite you to join us for this year’s Managing Internet and Digital Media Products Speaker Series. Come meet the people who shape the way technology and media impact each other, and hear about their industries, roles and experiences. Speakers will be joining us from companies such as Yahoo!, CBS Interactive, LucasArts, Mozilla, Lab126 (Amazon Kindle), YouTube, Hi5, Red Bricks Media, Visa and more!

Join us each week for an informal and personal setting that will provide deep insights into how great products are born and managed. With speakers from a variety of backgrounds (including Product Management, Product Marketing, Digital Advertising, Globalization, Strategic Alliances and more), the class aims to provide a holistic view of a product’s life cycle, as well as exposure to various career paths in the digital media and entertainment space.

Prof. Sara Beckman Named Faculty Director of Management of Technology Program

Dear Members of the Berkeley-Haas Community:

I am happy to announce that our Senior Lecturer Sara Beckman will be the new co-faculty director of the Management of Technology Program, a long and successful partnership between our school and the College of Engineering. MOT focuses on the use of technology to obtain competitive advantage.

Prof. Beckman will be joined by Prof. Shmuel Oren, who will serve as the faculty director for the College of Engineering. Profs Beckman and Oren are taking on responsibilities previously held by Haas Prof. Rashi Glazer and Prof. David Dornfeld from the College of Engineering. MOT’s Executive Director Andrew Isaacs will now serve as the program’s Director of New Programs, including studying a major new initiative within MOT. He will also continue to teach in MOT.

The MOT Program successfully integrates business and technology education in classes that bring MBA students and engineering students together. MOT is now part of the new Institute for Business Innovation at Berkeley-Haas, under the leadership of Prof. Michael Katz.

Prof. Beckman’s efforts in pioneering the cross-disciplinary study of product development in a popular MBA program elective and in bringing other electives on design and design thinking to the MBA curriculum was a key factor that led BusinessWeek magazine to name Haas as one of the top design-capable business schools in the world.

Her vision and expertise will be of great benefit to the school and the program. I have asked her to review MOT with a goal of exploring new opportunities and integrating the program even more tightly within our school’s emphasis on preparing leaders who know how to put fresh ideas to work anywhere and everywhere in business, not just in technology -- that is, “Leading Through Innovation.” The extension of MOT toward this broad concept of innovation will open up exciting new directions for the program's future.
